GreenGeeks Review 2026

GreenGeeks is a web host that sells itself on two things: low-cost WordPress hosting and a strong environmental promise. This review looks at what each plan includes, what it costs after the first year, where GreenGeeks is strong, where it falls short and who should choose it.

Most hosts compete on price and speed. GreenGeeks competes on those too, but its headline is different. It says it matches its energy use three times over with renewable energy, and it plants trees for each hosting account. If you care about the footprint of your website, that is a genuine point of difference.

A green promise does not make a host good, though. A blog needs reliable uptime, backups you can restore, decent support and a price you can live with at renewal. So I have looked at GreenGeeks the way I look at any host, and treated the environmental side as a bonus rather than the main reason to buy.

A note on how I wrote this. I have not run my own speed or uptime tests on GreenGeeks, so you will not find benchmark numbers here. Every plan detail and price below comes from GreenGeeks’ own website, checked on 13 October 2026. Where something is my opinion, I say so.

Key takeaways

  • The entry plan, Lite, was listed at $2.95 a month, prepaid for 12 months, renewing at $13.95 a month.
  • The best introductory price needs only a 12-month term, shorter than many budget hosts ask for.
  • Lite covers one website. Pro and Premium allow unlimited websites and add on-demand backups.
  • All plans list nightly backups, free SSL, LiteSpeed servers with built-in caching and free migration.
  • GreenGeeks says it matches its energy use 300% with renewable energy, and it has been an EPA Green Power Partner since 2009.
  • Renewal prices are four to five times the introductory price, so plan for year two.

What is GreenGeeks?

GreenGeeks is a web hosting company that sells shared and WordPress hosting, WooCommerce hosting, reseller hosting and VPS servers. Its home page says it has more than 55,000 customers.

For bloggers, the product that matters is its WordPress hosting. It is shared hosting, which means your site lives on a server with other websites. That keeps the cost low and is perfectly adequate for a new blog. If you are not sure what type of hosting you need, my guide to the best hosting for a new blog explains the options.

What makes GreenGeeks different is its environmental programme. The company says it works with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to match its energy use, including servers and staff workstations, three times over. It also works with One Tree Planted to plant trees for each hosting account, and its WordPress hosting page lists more than 50,000 trees planted. GreenGeeks says it has been recognised as a Green Power Partner by the US Environmental Protection Agency since 2009.

Key features

LiteSpeed servers and caching

GreenGeeks says its plans run on LiteSpeed web servers with built-in caching, and its shared hosting page also lists Redis caching. LiteSpeed works well with the free LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress, so you may not need to pay for a separate caching plugin.

That is a solid foundation, but not a promise about your own site. Your speed also depends on your theme, images and plugins.

Backups

All plans list nightly backups. On-demand backups, which let you take a copy yourself before a big change, are marked “No” for Lite and “Yes” for Pro and Premium on GreenGeeks’ comparison page.

This is one of the main reasons to look beyond Lite. Being able to take a backup just before you update a theme or install a plugin is useful. Whichever plan you choose, I would still add a backup plugin that stores copies somewhere other than your host.

Security

GreenGeeks lists free SSL certificates through Let’s Encrypt, renewed automatically, and Imunify360 malware scanning on all plans. Its shared hosting page also mentions free malware clean-up, with the note that restrictions may apply.

Free migration and domain

GreenGeeks offers free website migration, which it describes as “Free Unlimited Migration”. If you already have a blog elsewhere, that saves you a fiddly job.

Its pages say a domain is included for the first year, and the comparison page describes it as “Free with annual”. After that year you pay the normal yearly fee for the domain.

CDN and developer tools

GreenGeeks lists one-click CDN integration, SSH and SFTP access, and staging environments on higher tiers. The pages I checked did not say exactly which plans include staging, so ask before you buy if staging matters to you.

Data centres

GreenGeeks lists four data centre locations: Chicago in the US, Montreal in Canada, Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Singapore. Choose the one closest to most of your readers.

GreenGeeks plans and pricing

These are the WordPress hosting plans GreenGeeks listed on 13 October 2026. The same three plans and prices appeared on its shared hosting page.

PlanListed priceRenews atWebsitesStorageOn-demand backups
Lite$2.95 per month$13.95 per month125 GBNo
Pro$4.95 per month$18.95 per monthUnlimited50 GBYes
Premium$8.95 per month$30.95 per monthUnlimited100 GBYes

Each listed price is marked “Pre-paid for 12 months”, and each plan shows its renewal price underneath. All three list unmetered traffic and nightly backups. Premium also includes a free dedicated IP address, which GreenGeeks values at $48 a year.

How the pricing really works

The monthly figure is not a monthly bill. You pay for 12 months upfront. By my arithmetic, that is about $35.40 for Lite, $59.40 for Pro and $107.40 for Premium for the first year, before tax.

The good news is the term. Many budget hosts give their lowest price only on a three or four year contract. At GreenGeeks, the introductory price was shown on a 12-month term, so you are not locked in for long.

The bad news is the renewal. Lite renews at $13.95 a month, nearly five times the introductory price. Pro renews at $18.95 and Premium at $30.95. Those are the real long-term costs of GreenGeeks, so judge the host on them.

Watch out

The introductory price is for your first 12 months only. Before you pay, look at the renewal price shown under each plan and decide whether you are happy to pay it in year two. Check the cart for any extras that have been added, and note that the free domain covers the first year only.

Which plan should a blogger choose?

  • Lite is enough for one new blog. The compromise is no on-demand backups and only one website.
  • Pro is the plan I would choose. For $2 a month more on the introductory price, you get unlimited websites, double the storage and on-demand backups. GreenGeeks also marks it as its most popular plan.
  • Premium adds more storage and a dedicated IP address. A new blog does not need it.

Support and refunds

GreenGeeks says support is available 24/7, and its comparison page lists priority support on Pro and Premium. I have not tested its response times myself.

Every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, which GreenGeeks’ FAQ describes as unconditional. I could not open its terms of service when I checked, so read the refund conditions before you buy, especially for domain names, which hosts usually handle separately.

GreenGeeks pros and cons

Pros

  • Low introductory price on a 12-month term, not a multi-year contract
  • Strong environmental commitment, with renewable energy matched 300%
  • LiteSpeed servers with built-in caching
  • Nightly backups on every plan
  • Free migration and a free domain for the first year
  • Data centres in North America, Europe and Asia
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

Cons

  • Renewal prices are four to five times the introductory price
  • Lite allows only one website and has no on-demand backups
  • Plan pages do not list every feature clearly, such as staging
  • Fewer data centre locations than some larger hosts

Who should use GreenGeeks?

GreenGeeks is a good fit if:

  • You are starting a blog and want a short first commitment rather than a three or four year contract.
  • The environmental impact of your hosting matters to you.
  • You want LiteSpeed hosting so you can use the free LiteSpeed Cache plugin.
  • Your readers are near one of its four data centres.

It is a weaker fit if:

  • You want the lowest possible price over several years. The renewal prices are high, so compare total costs. My Hostinger review shows how a long-term budget host compares.
  • You need a data centre in a region it does not cover.
  • Your site already gets heavy traffic. Shared hosting is not the right tool for that.

Pro tip

Set a calendar reminder for a month before your first year ends. That gives you time to compare renewal prices, ask GreenGeeks whether a renewal discount is available, or move your blog if the price no longer suits you.

How to get started with GreenGeeks

  1. Choose a plan. Lite for one blog, Pro if you want on-demand backups or more than one site.
  2. Pick your data centre. Choose the location closest to most of your readers.
  3. Claim your free domain. Or connect a domain you already own.
  4. Review the cart. Check the total charged today and remove any extras you did not ask for.
  5. Install WordPress. Follow my guide on how to install WordPress if you have not done it before.
  6. Switch on SSL and LiteSpeed Cache. Then add a backup plugin before you publish your first post.

For everything after hosting, from choosing a theme to writing your first posts, follow my guide on how to start a blog. If you are planning to buy later in the year, my GreenGeeks Black Friday guide covers the seasonal offer.

Verdict: is GreenGeeks worth it in 2026?

For a new blogger who cares about the environment, yes. GreenGeeks gives you the features a blog needs, on LiteSpeed servers, with nightly backups and free migration, and its introductory price needs only a one-year commitment.

Go in knowing what year two costs. The renewal prices are high, and that is the main reason I would not call GreenGeeks the cheapest host overall. If you accept that, Pro is the plan I would choose, because on-demand backups and unlimited sites are worth the extra $2 a month.
